Rug Reweaving & Moth Damage Repair in New York, NY: A Manhattan Owner's Guide
There is a particular sinking feeling that comes with flipping back a corner of a favorite rug and finding a bare patch where the pile used to be, or a scatter of small holes you know were not there last year. A good rug is meant to outlive its owner, and the truth is most damage you find is repairable by someone who knows what they are doing. Rug reweaving and moth damage repair in New York, NY is some of the most rewarding work we do at ABC Rug & Carpet Cleaning.
We are a locally owned and operated rug cleaning and restoration company, licensed, bonded, and insured, with more than 20 years of experience bringing damaged rugs back to life. Our shop is in Midtown near the Diamond District, and we serve the entire Manhattan area.
How does hand reweaving actually work?
Reweaving is exactly what it sounds like, rebuilding a rug the same way it was originally made, knot by knot, by hand. Depending on the damage, that can mean color-matched yarn reweaving to fill a worn area so it disappears into the surrounding pattern, hole and tear reweaving to close a gap, or missing pile restoration to bring a flattened, bald section back to full height. When the damage runs deeper than the surface, we also do foundation rebuild work, repairing the warp and weft the whole rug is knotted onto, since a strong foundation is what everything else holds to.

What do moths do to a rug, and can it be fixed?
Moths themselves are not really the problem. It is their larvae, which feed on the wool and quietly chew through the pile in dark, undisturbed spots, often the areas under furniture or along an edge you rarely lift. By the time you see the moth holes, the larvae damage is usually already done. The good news is that even significant loss can be rewoven. Our moth damage repair starts with proper moth treatment to stop anything still living in the fibers, then we rebuild the eaten areas with matched wool so the repair blends in rather than standing out as a patch.
A tip worth knowing. Moths love wool that sits still in the dark, so the simplest prevention is movement and light. Every few months, lift the rug, vacuum both the top and the underside, and shift anything heavy that has been parked in one place. Rugs in a guest room, a closet, or under a bed are the ones that get hit, precisely because nobody disturbs them.
How long does a repair take, and is it worth it?
It depends on the size and depth of the damage, and a small reweave is a very different job from rebuilding a foundation across a large area. What we can tell you is that reweaving almost always costs less than replacing a rug of the same quality, and on an heirloom or hand-knotted piece there is often no true replacement anyway. We are glad to look at a rug and give you an honest read on what it needs before you commit to anything.
